Sourcing Indian Granite for Export: A Complete Buyer’s Guide
India is one of the world’s largest producers of natural granite, and for importers the appeal is clear: a huge range of colours, competitive quarry-direct pricing and consistent block supply. But sourcing granite for export is very different from buying a single kitchen worktop. This guide walks through what international buyers should check before placing a container order.
Know the popular Indian granite varieties
Indian granite is exported in hundreds of shades, but a handful dominate global demand. Black Galaxy, with its gold-fleck sparkle, is prized for countertops and feature walls. Steel Grey offers a neutral, hard-wearing surface for flooring and facades. Tan Brown brings a warm brown-black tone popular in kitchens and cladding. Choosing the right variety starts with your end market and the finish your customers expect.
Understand grades, thickness and finish
- Slab thickness — typically 18 mm and 20 mm for countertops, 30 mm for premium work. Confirm tolerance before shipment.
- Finish — polished, honed, flamed, leathered or brushed. The finish changes both look and slip resistance.
- Grade — first-quality material has consistent colour and minimal fissures; commercial grade costs less but varies more.
Verify the quarry and the supplier
Colour and quality vary quarry to quarry, even within the same named stone. Working with a partner who sources directly from established quarries — rather than trading whatever is available on the spot market — gives you consistency order after order. Ask for gang-saw slab photos, block numbers and, ideally, a pre-shipment inspection before the container is sealed.
Plan for export logistics
Granite is heavy, and a 20-foot container is usually weight-limited long before it is full. Proper bundling in seaworthy wooden crates, corner protection and correct weight distribution protect both the stone and the container. Clear documentation — commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin and phytosanitary certificate for the timber packing — keeps customs clearance smooth at the destination port.
