Basmati Rice Grades Explained: 1121, 1509, Pusa & Traditional
Basmati rice is one of India’s most recognised agricultural exports, but the word “basmati” covers several distinct grades — and the differences matter a great deal to buyers. Grain length, ageing, cooking behaviour and price all vary by variety. Here is a clear breakdown of the main export grades and how to choose between them.
1121 Basmati
The 1121 variety is famous for its extra-long grain — often the longest of any basmati — which can more than double in length when cooked. It is the go-to grade for markets that value dramatic, separate, fluffy grains, particularly across the Middle East. Available as raw, steamed and sella (parboiled) forms.
1509 Basmati
A shorter-duration crop than 1121, the 1509 grade offers long grain and good aroma at a more competitive price point. It cooks quickly and is a strong choice for buyers who want genuine basmati character with better value for high-volume foodservice.
Pusa and Traditional Basmati
Pusa basmati is a high-yielding, aromatic variety widely grown across northern India. Traditional basmati — the classic heirloom grain — is shorter than 1121 but carries the deepest, most distinctive aroma, and commands a premium among connoisseurs. Ageing further intensifies flavour and improves cooking performance.
Raw, steamed or sella?
- Raw — milled directly, bright white grain, delicate aroma.
- Steamed — lightly processed for firmer grain and better yield.
- Sella (parboiled) — golden, robust grain that holds up well in bulk cooking.
What buyers should specify
When requesting a quotation, share the variety, form (raw/steamed/sella), average grain length, moisture and broken percentage, and your packing preference. Reputable exporters clean, grade and pack to international buyer specifications and phytosanitary requirements, with lab parameters documented before shipment.
